The Emerald Ash Borer

The Emerald Ash Borer has arrived in Jefferson County and the surrounding counties in Kentucky and Indiana. Decimation and devastation caused by this insect has affected and will effect every homeowner who owns an Ash tree. Here in Louisville, it has been estimated that our tree canopy consists of approximately 17% Ash trees. Those Ash trees that are not on a regular treatment program have died or will die in the very near future.

One of the priorities for a homeowner to decide on is whether or not to treat the Ash tree or remove it. If the Ash tree is a major part of the total landscape and tree canopy of the residence, it might serve the homeowner best to treat the tree. If the Ash tree is one of several trees, and its loss will not have an adverse effect on the overall canopy, it might be sensible to remove the tree.  Once the homeowner decides upon a plan of action, it is advised that it be acted upon. Prompt removal is key to avoiding safety risks associated with having dead Ash trees, and prompt treatment is key to protecting the Ash trees from the Emerald Ash Borer.

If the homeowner chooses to treat the Ash tree, we recommend the product that makes use of the chemical, emamectin benzoate. This product is directly injected into
the tree during the late Spring and through the early Summer months, and it protects the tree for 2 years. We have found this chemical to be very effective, having an efficacy rate of over 95%.

If the homeowner chooses to remove the Ash tree, it will be less of a safety hazard both to our tree crews and to the homeowners to do so when the tree is still living rather than waiting until it has completely died. Once your Ash tree has died, it becomes a threat to your property.EAB Graphic
