Fertilizing

Protect your trees and shrubs—keep them healthy with regular fertilizing.

Bob Ray Co. Inc. has trained and professional arborists to help you develop a fertilizing program for your trees. Bob Ray Co. maintains a proactive philosophy, which emphasizes the health and care of plants.

Unfortunately for our city trees, the natural conditions of the forest, which encourage healthy tree growth, are rarely present in urban areas.

By providing essential nutrients and other elements needed for continued growth and protection, fertilizing regularly insures your trees and shrubs an optimum growing environment for their health and ability to ward off damaging insects and disease.

Fertilization

Unfortunately for our city trees, the natural conditions of the forest, which encourage healthy tree growth, are rarely present in urban areas.

In reality, forest trees are being fertilized through the natural process of recycling. In addition, trees have adapted over time to the existing soil and environmental conditions of their natural surroundings. Forest soils are rich in humus, which is replenished by the decay of plant and animal residue. Leaves are relatively high in accumulated nutrients and their decomposition is an important source of returning nutrients to the soil. Research has demonstrated that trees get more than half of their annual requirements from these sources. In contrast, domestic and street lawns are usually very low in humus and fertility. Leaves are removed, which interrupts nature’s recycling program for nutrients and prevents the accumulation of nutrients. The soil elements should be replaced with supplemental fertilization. Also shade and ornamental trees are often selected and planted for their aesthetic appeal without regard for the soil, sunlight or other elements that help them thrive in their natural setting. Thus, they are subjected to very unfavorable soil and environmental conditions, which increases the need for nutrients which would be otherwise lacking.

Bob Ray Co. Inc. offers a personalized fertilization program for trees and shrubs in the urban setting.  Bob Ray’s certified and professional arborists can help design a schedule for subsurface fertilization to offset any present or future nutrient deficiencies in the soil.

Many other factors can combine to put stress on our urban trees, including construction activities, paving, digging, grade changes, lack of sufficient top soil, and so on. Just like us, when trees do not get the required nutrients and water, they become rundown and tired. Tired trees are much more susceptible to disease and damaging insects.

One thing you can do is try to recreate the tree’s natural environment by providing mulch rings. Most people, however, will not be able to mulch their whole yard! Fertilization adds to the soil the nutrients missing, enabling the tree to utilize them as needed. Research shows that trees in our urban areas will be healthier when fertilized properly (along with proper watering). Fertilizing is a critical step in rebuilding root systems and replenishing energy reserves. Its main purpose is not to create bigger, faster growing trees, but rather healthier, more vigorous trees. Bob Ray Co. offers its subsurface fertilization treatment November through April. This subsurface soil injection treatment is a special mix of a liquid fertilizer that slowly releases its nutrients. It will not burn plant roots. It is organically based and has very low leach potential. We combine this with a mixture of beneficial probiotics, organic stimulants and such micronutrients as iron and sulfur. This treatment will promote healthier roots, which will increase the uptake of essential nutrients and water and in turn will increase the overall vitality of trees.

Fertilizing3WEBOPTIMIZEDBob Ray Co.’s nutrient trunk injection program is used when sufficient nutrients cannot be injected into the soil around the tree. This can occur in areas where the majority of the tree’s root systems are under a constructed site, or if the tree has been planted in a raised bed. Most often, Bob Ray Co. utilizes this method with trees that have been planted in parking lots or are surrounded by structures. A nutrient trunk injection enables the tree to utilize the nutrients immediately, which can be needed if the tree is under great stress.

Bob Ray Co.’s nutrient foliar spray consists of spraying the foliage directly with nutrients in which the tree is deficient. Most often, this method is used on fruit trees or in orchards and for specific nutrient deficiencies.

Bob Ray Co. does most of its tree fertilization after the first hard frost. Fall fertilization encourages root growth and the appropriate amount of spring growth that the roots can support. Bob Ray Co. does offer its nutrient foliar spray in early spring on fruit and nut trees so as to make the nutrients immediately available. Bob Ray Co. avoids applications in late summer or early fall due to concerns about stimulating growth that will not harden off before winter.
